An electric locomotive is a railway self-propelled vehicle, the power plant of which includes high-power traction motors, the power supply of which is carried out from the main contact network through a current collector located on the roof of the body.

Depending on the type of electrical equipment installed, the power of the locomotive is provided by a constant or alternating current, or by a double method. Components (units): The electric locomotive consists of a mechanical part, pneumatic and electrical equipment.

The mechanical part is made up of a body and carts. The body is supported through the supports on the frame of the trolleys, and they, in turn, through the system of spring suspension and axle boxes to wheel pairs. The trolleys are equipped with a lever-brake transmission and pneumatic devices necessary for its activation, as well as a device for suspending traction motors and transferring their torque to wheel pairs.

Electrical equipment consists of traction motors, converters and transformers (on AC electric locomotives), auxiliary machines (motor-compressors, motor-fans, control generators, motor generators, motor pumps and phase converters), electrical equipment.

Pneumatic equipment includes compressors, air tanks, valves, operator’s cranes, pressure switches, end cranes, disconnecting, double-thrust, three-way, pneumatic interlocks, connecting sleeves, manometers and other auxiliary devices.

The cost of certification of mainline electric locomotives is made up of the cost of the main work for certification, as well as tests of selected samples of a certain type.
